From our JULY SIDEWALK STUDIES series: WHY “STUDY” (IN THIS HEAT)?!
ACTION & ABSTRACTION in Greenpoint
Borges' famously short story, On Exactitude in Science, imagines a map so detailed that it replaces the world it seeks to represent. Sontag's Against Interpretation sees art as an experience to embody, rather than a message to decipher. Both works question what, exactly, is lost when we try to represent reality.
We'll join Borges and Sontag in this inquiry, with attention to representation's limits — and whatever lies beyond them.
