Sidewalk Study: GREAT DERANGEMENT in Harlem

  • Harlem New York, New York (map)

From our JULY SIDEWALK STUDIES series: WHY “STUDY” (IN THIS HEAT)?!

GREAT DERANGEMENT in Harlem

Amitav Ghosh's essay, The Great Derangement, argues that narrative conventions of modern literature (especially novels) have impaired our ability to anticipate and prevent climate catastrophe. He calls to reject bourgeois narratives of "regularity" and "probability" in favor of literary forms that more faithfully represent our cataclysmic times: namely, EPIC and MYTH.

We'll experiment with modes of "mythical" attention in our journey through Harlem, and ask how attention to the improbable can reshape our sense of responsibility to each other — and to the planet.

Thursday, July 11th: 7pm in HARLEM
