Sidewalk Study: Underground Utopias

  • Barclay's Center 620 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11217 United States (map)

From JUNE SIDEWALK STUDIES: ~FUGITIVE UTOPIAS~

Critic and philosopher Boris Groys is a world expert on the art and media of the Soviet Union. In Utopia Underground, he casts the construction of the Moscow Metro as the highest expression of Stalinist architecture's ambition to break completely with history — after all, what better blank slate than the earth's untroubled depths? We'll think about the ways that the subway delivers (or fails to deliver) on utopian promises. Since Groys' essay is part of Katherina Gruzei's photo anthology, our Practice will involve cameras.

Sunday, June 3Oth: 1pm in the NYC SUBWAY (beneath Downtown Brooklyn)

Boris Groy's Utopia Underground with Amalia & Peter.
